Europe companies to become the leader in GenAI, according to adesso study

Generative AI (GenAI) is revolutionizing our future by automating complex tasks, enhancing creativity, and personalizing experiences across various industries. In the IT sector, GenAI transforms development processes, improves system efficiency, and enables smarter, faster decision-making throughout the technology stack.

As organizations worldwide prepare for this revolution, adesso's latest "GenAI Impact Report" examines Europe's readiness and global perceptions of European contributions. The findings reveal that companies increasingly favor Europe-based GenAI solutions and support stronger regulatory frameworks in this space.

Who's the biggest service provider in GenAI?

As the competition to dominate GenAI accelerates, fresh data reveals it's no longer a two-player race. While the United States remains ahead, China is rapidly narrowing the gap, and Europe is also making strides.

During the AI summit in Paris in February, the European Union revealed large-scale investments in the AI sector to keep up with global competition and strengthen Europe's technological sovereignty. These investments, coupled with a clear focus on developing safe and ethical AI, are intended to help Europe become a global leader.

In the GenAI study conducted by adesso, we looked at how European companies currently assess generative AI, how ready they think they are, and the role GenAI now plays in their day-to-day work. The IT service provider surveyed 400 managers across the European economy.

Key findings of the survey:

  • Companies demand "GenAI made in Europe." Survey respondents strongly favor European-developed alternatives, with 71% stating it's either essential or imperative that GenAI solutions their companies use or consider are developed within the European Union. This highlights a growing awareness of digital sovereignty and a clear determination to avoid dependence on non-European providers.
  • Regulation is a necessary instrument.  Most respondents favored stronger regulation of AI solutions such as ChatGPT, with 48% stating they "somewhat agree" and 20% even saying they "completely agree." These figures suggest that companies accept regulation and that many see it as a necessary instrument for dealing responsibly with AI and managing potential risks.
  • Companies' readiness for GenAI is increasing. Companies now also see themselves as better prepared for GenAI. The proportion of companies that feel well or very well-equipped rose from 31% in the previous year to 50%. At the strategic level, however, companies are only tentatively starting to adopt GenAI. Only 59% of companies have already developed an AI strategy, of which 18% only look at traditional AI.

Study method

The market research firm HEUTE UND MORGEN polled a total of 400 business leaders in Germany about GenAI and ChatGPT on behalf of adesso in February 2025.
